Mechanical systems that are deteriorating will deposit metallic particles into their lubrication systems. Oil analysis involves taking a sample of the oil, analysing its metallic content and the nature of the particles and thus ascertaining a machines condition. Oil analysis can be employed where other surveys are not suitable or feasible. It can also be used as an additional tool to diagnose a specific problem.
