In line with our vision of ‘Making it Work’ and making change for a better future, Vipac took part in the Green Cities Conference 2010, held at Melbourne’s Exhibition Centre.

Vipac’s passion and commitment was clearly evident as an exhibitor. We successfully managed to illustrate and clearly define our strong capabilities, expertise and professionalism within Engineering Consulting Services. Generating a number of leads and capturing
the imagination of delegates and fellow exhibitors, Vipac foresees greater acceptance
of change and ultimately a greener future.

With Melbourne’s burgeoning population expected to grow in excess of 8 million by 2050,
the Government, along with many stakeholders, are sharing the same vision — the creation
of densely populated sustainable satellite cities, leveraging on renewable energy sources, shared energy amongst entire suburbs and water conservation. Key reports from
the conference, indicate the cost of building Green star apartment buildings are negligible
in comparison to those of luxury apartment buildings.

Given the importance of value for money in an uncertain economic climate, several major contractors are finally taking note and want to contribute to building Greener buildings. Conferences such as Green Cities are being used as the perfect vehicle for positive PR
and ensuring future growth; hence the likes of Leighton Contractors, Baulderstone and Grocon were all involved in the conference within some capacity. The future of Green buildings
are further justified with statistics from North America illustrating a greater return on investment for Green Rated buildings versus traditional buildings when measured on rental income.
Local findings add further weight to the Green debate, with a local law firm announcing that they achieved 8% greater productivity in six months post redevelopment of their 500 Collins Street Melbourne office, versus the six months pre-development.

All this information paints a greener picture, with a greater need for highly skilled designers
and engineers. The emphasis is being placed on ‘Green’ and not ‘Greed’. Microclimate, ESD, natural ventilation will be discussed and called upon more and more to create a functional, healthier and happier future. Vipac has and will continue to play a pivotal role.
