Vipac Engineers & Scientists Ltd
is an engineering research, development and consultancy company with offices located throughout Australia and South-East Asia. With over 28 years experience in the building industry, Vipac offers engineering consulting services in the areas of architectural acoustics, noise and vibration control, aerodynamics, thermodynamics and energy rating as well as window certification testing. Vipac acts as an independent specialist consultant to developers, architects and builders and holds Australian NATA accreditation for a wide range of laboratory tests. All assessments are supported by extensive field instrumentation, advanced CAE programs and facilities, such as a boundary layer wind tunnel, various acoustic chambers as well as façade and window test rigs.
Vipac’s engineers are involved in all different stages of the building and construction process – design, certification, tender preparation, construction supervision as well as maintenance and remedial advice. These extensive services have been an integral part in many hotel and office developments, apartment buildings, airports, sports facilities and special-purpose spaces such as theatres and concert halls or film and sound studios.
Wind Engineering
In Vipac’s boundary layer wind tunnel, scale models of proposed developments and surrounds are tested under simulated atmospheric boundary layer wind flow. This facility provides clients with accurate information that cannot be obtained from any other analytical, empirical or computational technique. Wind tunnel studies help to avoid unpleasant or dangerous pedestrian level wind conditions, predict the dispersion of atmospheric pollutants, identify high-pressure hot spots on façade cladding or determine the static and dynamic loads on a structure. These services also encompass full-scale measurement of existing structures, the preparation of wind effect statements for development applications and preliminary load estimates.
Architectural Acoustics
Advanced computing techniques including ray tracing are used to determine the appropriate type, size and acoustic characteristics of finishes to achieve the desired acoustic environment. Where variable acoustic conditions are required, physical solutions or electro-acoustic reverberation enhancement systems can be designed.
Noise Control
Noise control treatments can be designed at the concept stage from drawings of proposed mechanical systems or for existing buildings affected by noise. The latest sound insulation products are evaluated in Vipac’s NATA accredited testing laboratories and specified to control external and internal noise.
Sound System Design
Vipac’s staff use advanced computing techniques to design an optimum sound system and to predict its performance providing maximum speech intelligibility, music clarity and sound envelopment.
Façade Testing
Reconstruction of leaking facades and repairing of water-damaged interiors is an unnecessary expense that can be avoided by on-site or laboratory façade testing. A wide range of wind and rain conditions can be simulated on full-scale test models. In addition to static pressure chambers and AAMA Aeroplane Engine methods, Vipac operates the industry standard SIROWET system, a proven facade testing technique.
Overshading, Glare and Reflection Studies
Glare from reflective facades is hazardous and discomforting to pedestrians, traffic and neighbours. Planning authorities have stipulated regulations on buildings to limit the extent of solar glare and the impact of overshadowing. These impacts are accurately predicted using computational methods to optimise the building envelope and satisfy planning regulations.
Thermal Comfort
Thermal comfort problems are solved by Vipac’s engineers, using an extensive range of software such as 3-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and heat transfer models to evaluate and optimise proposed designs. These analytical skills are backed up by extensive laboratory facilities, including laboratory testing of air conditioning devices, diffusers, jets and air dispersion in spaces.
Window Certification Testing
Vipac has the facilities and experience to submit full-scale window and door models to extensive testing to verify their strength and durability. During these tests, sample windows are subjected to high wind and driving rain simulations, air infiltration pressure, operating force and ultimate proof testing. Vipac also offers acoustic certification tests, security ranking and energy rating tests of windows and doors.
Building Energy Rating
Vipac, a certified assessor of building energy efficiency, evaluates proposed developments, addressing all relevant Council regulations for energy conservation and efficiency. These assessments incorporate practical recommendations concerning embodied energy, power consumption, solar loading, water usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
Structural Vibration
Structural vibration arises from a variety of sources, such as ground vibration, wind excitation and dynamic occupant loads, and causes severe problems to the integrity of a structure and the comfort of its occupants. Vipac’s staff can monitor and analyse vibration problems and implement active and passive solutions.
Predictive Maintenance
The reliability of air conditioning systems is dependent on regular vibration condition monitoring and the detection of imbalance, misalignment, electrical faults or worn components. Vipac’s maintenance staff use techniques such as vibration condition monitoring, infrared thermographic surveys, lubricating oil analysis and motor circuit testing to resolve a wide range of system faults.
