Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Bangkok
Features: This US$3.8 billion airport has the world’s tallest control tower and the world’s third largest single-building airport terminal at 300,000m2.
Challenge: To identify a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to air-conditioning to cool the airport.
Vipac’s role: To conduct air distribution tests to ensure a comfortable thermal environment for the 45 million passengers that use the airport each year.
Benefit: Vipac increased ventilation through displacement diffusers and a system of radiant floor cooling to cope with the tropical climate. This significantly reduced the costs and carbon footprint compared with more conventional methods of cooling such as air-conditioning.
