Mall of the Emirates, Kempinski Hotel, Dubai
Features: The five star Kempinski Hotel at the Mall of the Emirates is strategically located in the heart of what is now deemed the ‘New Dubai’. The Mall also incorporates the world-renowned Ski Dubai, a Magic Planet family entertainment area, a 14-screen multiplex cinema, the Mall’s 500-seat DUCTAC community theatre and accompanying arts centre, and 70 coffee shops and restaurants, making it the biggest shopping mall outside North America.
Vipac’s role: To provide acoustic, wind, thermal and air-quality engineering consultancy services and provide details of noise mitigation measures and construction fabric and services systems.
Challenge: To achieve high quality indoor and outdoor experience for persons making the Mall a destination.
Benefit: Starting at the car park, the design achieved natural ventilation of all areas. Indoor/outdoor transition spaces were designed to achieve comfort on more weeks of ‘shoulder’ conditions between summer and winter by harnessing the potential of the local sea breezes. High quality acoustic design targets in a dense set of schemes of zoning within the mall. Made recommendations that led to sound insulation of the façade and inter-tenancy walls, as well as the reduction of lift noise and vibration.
