Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), Victoria

Features: This award-winning centre has a pillarless floor space of 30,000 square metres, making it the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Challenge: To establish acceptable wind levels on the footbridge due to its exposure to wind.

Vipac’s role: Appointed as microclimate consultant, Vipac was responsible for wind exposures of towers, avant-garde bridge, and large span roofs; leading to wind response, safety and strength.

Benefit: Obtained comfortable conditions for pedestrian areas including entrances, walkways and outdoor restaurants, as well as design optimisation on the footbridge through analysis of the wind loads.

In 2009 Vipac was awarded the UDIA Victoria Environmental Excellence Award for its consulting work on the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
