Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport, Egypt

Features: The Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport is the third busiest airport in Egypt, with approximately 10 million passengers arriving and departing through its gates annually.

Challenge: Open ground exposure typical of an airport site coupled with large span membrane structure and steel support systems.

Vipac’s role: To conduct in-depth wind tunnel testing using a scale model of the airport to determine the structural load on the fabric membrane roofs of the arrival and departure terminals.

Benefit: Evaluation of membrane loads and tensions, passing through to the cables and anchors, and to the massive ring beam system. Minimisation of the mass of steel in support structures.
