Cybertips: How to futureproof your passwords

Did you know it’s better to have long and complex passwords that don’t change, rather than shorter passwords that often change? When we frequently update passwords, we tend to experience “password fatigue” and apply superficial changes that cybercriminals like.

Here’s what you can do to up your password game.

  • A memorable but long password is more hackproof than a short one full of special characters.
  • Use phrases to build a password, then swap a few words with non-English, misspelled or coined ones, as well as insert special characters.
  • Your email is the most important service to be protected. Many other services will allow password reset facilities using only an email address as confirmation.
  • Avoid reusing passwords for different services where practical. Security breaches occur even for large or careful organisations.
  • Not everyone can remember long and complex passwords, so store them in a secure password manager like KeePass.
